Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, fatal teen crashes increase dramatically. Take the Be Safe Driving Pledge to stay focused behind the wheel this summer– you'll be automatically registered for the chance to win a $10 Amazon Gift Card!

TAKE THE PLEDGE

SUMMER:

Across the United States, over 7,000 people died in teen-related crashes from 2010–2019 during the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Teen drivers have a higher rate of fatal crashes due to lack of experience behind the wheel and driver distractions – especially if their friends are in the car. NCAST is encouraging teens to take the Be Safe Pledge – to avoid distractions while driving, to learn and obey all traffic laws, and to urge your friends do the same.

Whether you're driving alone or with friends, use common sense and avoid scary behavior. Texting and emailing while driving is illegal, and playing games, browsing the internet or social media while driving is dangerously distracting. Don't drive if drowsy, and NEVER get behind the wheel if you’re under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

If you're riding with a fellow teen who’s driving, avoid distracting them and encourage other passengers to do the same.

Don’t Clown Around.

100 DEADLIEST DAYS FOR TEEN DRIVERS

Limit Passengers

When a teen driver has their friends in the car, the risk of a crash increases dramatically! Two additional passengers increase the risk of a crash by 158%.

Eliminate Distractions

It’s just not worth the risk! That text, TikTok, or email can wait. Instead, focus on driving, or pull over to a safe location if you must interact with your phone.

Restrict Night Driving

Reduced visibility, inexperience, and driver drowsiness are factors that make night driving dangerous for teens. Depending on your age, curfew restrictions may also apply.

Driving Tips To Keep Summer Safe

Wear Your Seat Belt

Using a safety belt is one of the most effective ways to save lives and reduce injuries in crashes. Also encourage your friends to buckle up every trip, every time.

Obey Posted Speed Limits

Speed is a factor in more than 33% of all fatal teen crashes. Observing speed limits greatly reduces the likelihood of being involved in a crash.

Always Pay Attention

A second of inattention can be a fatal mistake. Scanning the road ahead helps you remain alert, and be prepared for hazards or changing traffic conditions.

NEVER Drive Impaired

Drugs and alcohol alter your coordination, reaction time, and other driving skills. Never ride with an impaired driver, and always have a plan to get home safe!
