All North Carolinians getting where they are going safely.

While North Carolina has a dynamic community of issue-specific transportation safety advocates, what was missing was one organization with expertise in conducting high-impact public communications efforts, providing effective grassroots and grasstops citizen engagement, and serving to champion public policies that promote better behaviors to combat perils to safety across all forms and manner of transportation.

The North Carolina Alliance for Safe Transportation (NCAST) was created to be that organization, with one goal in mind: reduce the number of transportation-related crashes, injuries and fatalities in North Carolina.

Create a video, billboard design or radio spot to motivate, persuade and encourage your peers to not drive distracted. You can speak to them on this subject in a way that adults cannot – the more impact you make, the more lives you can save.

HIGHWAY HEROES AT RISK

Struck and killed. It’s a chilling reality— not only for roadside assistance providers (RAPs), including tow truck drivers, mobile mechanics, emergency roadside technicians, and safety service patrols who put themselves at risk every day to help others — but regular drivers like you dealing with a flat or other car trouble. New research reveals that vehicle collisions with roadside workers are not always the result of poor visibility. More often than not, speed, driver distractions, and/or impairment are a factor.

BE AWARE BEHIND THE WHEEL!

Speed Limits – 89% of the crashes occurred at locations with 55 mph or higher speed limits, almost all on interstates or other limited-access highways.
Weather Conditions – 84% of crashes occurred in good weather without precipitation/slippery road conditions.
Time of Day – 63% occurred during darkness, of which nearly two-thirds were at locations without street lighting. But 34% of the crashes were in daylight.
Driver Distraction/Impairment/Fatigue – 63% occurred in crashes in which the striking vehicle had already left the road and was traveling on the shoulder or beyond before impact. This suggests the involvement of factors such as impairment, fatigue, or distraction. More than one-third of striking drivers who were tested for alcohol were alcohol-positive. But nearly half were not tested.

Remember to give space and reaction time to ANYONE (not just roadside assistance, police, fire, EMS) working on the side of the road. Every ounce of awareness could be the difference between life and death.
